What Picture Do You See On Your Camera

By Odesola Taiwo

He was only asked to introduce himself, and then with a head bow, eyes staring intently at his feet and the latter which were shaking in rhyme with an unheard tune, voice breaking in-between the few words been muttered  in front of over  1,000 people sited at the auditorium. “Ehm….ehm… you know, I mean….my name is Calistus Whohem”.,he finally said. Then the young smart lady who was anchoring the youth program had no option but to politely retrieve the device used in enhancing sound from Calistus to save him the further disgrace of falling off the podium.

What do you think happened to him? He possibly couldn’t gather up enough courage to properly introduce himself in the presence of such a great crowed. I guess this scene isn’t too absurd or new to you! You sure might have come in contact with such timid person somehow somewhere; or probably you are in that shoe.

Calistus obviously lack either confidence or he has low self-esteem and poor self-image.

Self – image is not the pictures of yourself posing at the camera of your phone or a digital camera. It is the picture of the image formed in the natural camera of the mind. Simply put; it is how you see yourself on the inside. What you think about your present abilities, and your future capacities. Your self-image is the major determine how you present yourself before others. You can’t look good enough on the outside if you can’t feel good enough from the inside.

Confidence is knowing and believing in what God says you are.  This does not in any way connote been full of pride, not at all, but being able to boldly come up and present you expressly.

Low-self-esteem is seeing a poor image of oneself, rating oneself so low, not thinking good of you. It kills more than death, it reduces the confidence of an individual to a minus zero level. Some fake confidence or hid under the banner of “I am a quiet person’’. They wouldn’t attempt a thing even when it seems like their life revolves around it. They are always separated from people who according to them are more “classic”.

Low-self-esteem imprints a sense of insecurity that brings about suspicion. You feel like everyone is talking about you even when no one makes an “oh’’ with a little rounded mouth. It feels good to walk among the crowd, when no one will notice you and becomes a disaster when you take a few steps alone, it would seem as if the ground should open up and swallow you, you can’t help it but to fall at every steps taken. You tell some silent lies to yourself that you are not good at it, others are better; you are not up to the task. It might even be a skill as little as learning how to use the recorder!

To further throw more light into some attributes of the low-self-esteems, they not only look down on themselves, they don’t appreciate others who do it well. Some build fences of pride around themselves, the bottom line is that they want to be noticed by force, so aggression comes in. people of low self-esteem only motion in life with no direction, they don’t know what they are good at so they keep on attempting and quitting, they follow the crowd but when they are alone, they quit, for better illustration, they are like a reed easily blown away by wind. Firmness is not included in their anthem.

A little bending, another ditch, a rough cross, distorted and unreal image! These are been created in the natural camera of the mind, these are what they see whenever they look inwards, into their identities, their journeys. Regardless of their gender/ages, there are no differences.

If she happens to be a female child, she spends the greatest part of her life in search of a man to cling to and draws him to filling up the ditches, straighten up the bends and correct her image for her. Underneath the mascara and foundations is a young girl crying to the man to bring an external light which will reveal her true identity. She becomes so thirsty for love that she rushes into what seems to be love, half-naked and ill prepared. She always loves too quickly, hold too tightly and more often than not, loose too quickly, the one she had aspired to grasp. She prepares her body in exchange for her mind, she garnishes herself to be served as a meat for the hungry man who takes advantage of her without any regret, eats and disposes away. Loose woman!

If it were to be a male child, he give in to alcoholism, drug abuse and touts display, doing all of these to disregard his emptiness. But unfortunately, it is like hammering an open wound.

The timid young man/woman today were once confident, the loose woman that walks the street was once chaste, bend roads were once straight, distorted images were once real. What then happened?

In a twinkle of an eye, moving from pampers to puberty. So much have been imprinted! Experts revealed that the most crucial years of a child if from the lower ages, you can make or mar a child at this tender age. Unintended damages, cracks, molestations, abuses, bruises, wrapped up innocently in words or actions deposited subsequently as the switch that brings daylight turns off and on throughout the years of a child’s development, have been piled up to make this distorted images we see today!

You see, when a child gets abuses, his/her self-image gets blur day by day and the final result is a distorted image seen in low self-esteems. I quiet understand that “ did has been done” but something can still be done to break loose this shell of low-self-esteem which has encaged you for long.

I wish that you follow on the ride to revealing the solution that follows in the few lines ahead.

Look deeper beyond the faults: those with high-self-esteem, those who have confident and those who appreciate themselves didn’t take easy ride to achieve that, it took them long process of hard work! Spanning from looking deep into oneself and seeing the actual image being formed (I mean whatever it is you see, whatever mess you think your life is.) accept your status as it is, get to know your weaknesses and strengths, for instance, I———– (fill in your first name), am a fat person, or you’d prefer to use ‘fabulous’, or a slim/lepa or skinny. I am tall/short, dark/fair. That step is needed for us to be able to recognize and accept our physique, appreciate your physique, it is a blessing.

Identify your weaknesses:  The second step is to examine your ways critically, categorically write out all that you are capable of doing. I.e. your characters for instance, I ——– (insert your name), am a liar, a thief, gossiper, procrastinator, fraud, unfaithful, womanizer, drunkard, prostitute. Even if my list and yours contained some of the same characters, each one will be different in myriad ways for they are personal.

Identify your Strengths: the third step is to list the areas of your strength. Those things that are very good and you are good at them.

Then finally make a decision now to improve on your weaknesses by the way of relating them on your kneels in prayer with actions.  Tell God how empty you are, no man, alcohol or drugs can fill up your emptiness and make you whole, only God is able.

“If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves and turn from their evil ways and come to me, I will hear them and heal their land” God promised.

Remain under the mighty power of the Lord Jesus Christ and in due season, inner strengths will be unsheathed from within you.

Note: the only difference between low and high self-esteem is the ability to discover ones strengths and work on the weakness. Know who you are

FCS is a Para Church and interdenominational Organization, an expression of Church in Schools. We compliment what the Church is doing howbeit in the school environment. As the Church caters for its members in the various Local Assemblies, so FCS cater for their children who are students in the various schools they attend. FCS is relevant because many youths do not go to Church and may not go to Church but are in Schools and are being reached, evangelized and discipled through FCS.  We are a Christian Students Ministry reaching Pupils in Primary Schools, Teenagers in Secondary Schools and Young Adults in Tertiary Schools across Nigeria.

What we do could be summarised by Isaiah 54: 13 which says “And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children. We strongly believe that if the youths are properly evangelized and discipled to be like Christ, the world will be at peace.

We believe God is calling on you to invest your time and resources here. FCS is a fertile field to sow your seeds.

Most of the present day secular songs have nothing to take home. No moral values, no wisdom. The place of sex and money is amplified beyond reason. God bless you as singles in a relationship, you sit down with your partner to watch secular songs for 1 hour;  you both may leave that room with you lives never remaining the same.

I understand that there is a shade of secular song that is in a way in between not Christian not Muslim but not corrupt like the “Fellas”, “Asa” and some old folks. But I advise strongly that Christian should abstain from even this kind. If you are a Christian why  not exhaust Christian songs first, deal with new songs and even old school Christian song and they are sure to bless and occupy ones heart  for a lifetime.

Remember, Scriptures admonish that we should choke our body, spirit and soul with God’s word and things that edify us.

Secular song is any song that does not have it’s bearing on God. The message of such song is opposed to the culture, nature, person and the principles of God’s kingdom and the Christian faith and practice, in other words they run contrary to what Christianity stands for.

See we are new soldiers in a very old war, or are you not aware. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God. And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Col 3:16-17”

We can’t afford to entangle ourselves with worldly matters. I have said all of this not to impress you but to impress upon you that Christian have no business with Secular songs. I fear for our world but thank God Jesus died and He gave us an assurance that the gates of hell would not prevail against His church.

Secular Music: Does it Really Matter?

There have been controversies as to whether a Christian especially the youth should listen to Secular music. In this survey we ask young Christians about their view on the subject matter and here is what they have to say. We believe that you will read and be blessed. feel free to share your own view with us.

Before answering the questions, there’s something’s I want to explain. The number one reason God created us is for us to worship Him and no one can worship our creator acceptably except in spirit and in truth.

However, He gave us the power of choice – the ability to choose. It’s left for us to either worship Him or worship the devil.

People believe generally that worshiping God is done only when we sing slow songs. But it’s not true. Whatsoever a man does is an act of worship to God, that is our behavior, offerings, prayers, studying the word, going to Church, evangelism, our services to God  etc. are all act of worship to him.

But what the devil does is to make sure that worship doesn’t reach God always. That’s why he is always trying to distract and causes all manner of things to frustrate us from offering a true worship to God.

Now secular simply means – “Without God”. Jesus is the word but the world doesn’t like him because His is the light and wherever there’s light everything in the dark is exposed. Whenever the name Jesus is been mentioned people don’t like it because it Judges them. So, the tactics the enemy use is to secularize everything by removing God from songs. Secular also mean fighting against God. When we don’t do what God created us for (to worship him) we are simply fighting against Him.

We are meant to preach the good news (Jesus) to the four corners of the earth with songs, sermon, lifestyle etc. Jesus must be the center, for without him there’s no message even in singing. As a gospel artist you are to talk about him to the world not about yourself. That’s why any secular singer cannot worship God.

A Christian youth shouldn’t play or listen to secular songs because it doesn’t glorify God. Remember, our reason for existence is to worship God.

Effects of Secular Music on Christian Youths

Secular songs do affect one spiritual life. Every song has a source and they are two sources – Holy Spirit or demonic spirits. All songs have a spirit backing them up. What secular songs does is to arouse an unclean thoughts in our heart (thoughts that don’t glorify God) and the Bible warned us to always guide our heart diligently for from out of it flows the issues if life.  If you listen to secular songs as a born again Christian, is a matter of time for u to backslide.

  • Help your friends when they are in need because a friend in need is a friend indeed.

My First Kiss

By Odesola Taiwo

“You say you love the rain, but you open your umbrella when it rains. You say you love the sun, but you find a shadow spot when the sun shines. You say you love the wind, but you close your windows when wind blows. That’s why I’m afraid to say that I love you”.

This was a message that cut my attention as I glanced through my mails that morning. Frank who has been having a crush on me right from high school sent me this mail after making several fruitless advances towards getting my attention. All the while I’ve pretended not to like him because I used to be a decent girl while growing up. I wouldn’t want to fail neither my parents who have confidence in me, nor my pastor who always looked at me as a model sweet sixteen among the teens.

It was on a valentine day just after Frank and I got admission into same university. It was not a coincidence in Frank’s part rather it was another great opportunity for him to win my uncompromising heart. After reading the mail, I was down thinking, though never had intention of hooking up with any guy till my third year, because I wanted to face my studies squarely and hooking up could be a lot of distractions.

Still pondering on the mail, my phone rang. It was frank. He asked if I could come on a date with him that night at a guesthouse close to my school. At first I didn’t like the idea, but I gave it a second thought considering the fact that Frank has been someone I had admired secretly. I gave a positive response to his.

After that night we got talking and later he demanded for a kiss – my first kiss – which I gave him, he then asked for something that I have treasured all this while – My Virginity. But I resisted that day. My resistance persisted until after three attempts. But after his third attempt, I was scared of losing him totally. Lacking idea of what next to do, wanting to keep him but avoiding to yield to his request, I was then found at a cross road of either to lose him or to comprise my stands. Obviously he wasn’t getting a very clear “NO” from Me. Then he knew I could submit after further persuasions. Having read really wide on how to escape the consequences of sex and STDs, my logistics were decent and my level of desire was raised high. I resolved to giving him a chance. With full confidence that I can avoid the dangers of pre-marital sex. I removed the umbrella while in the rain to show my love to the rain, I stayed under the scorching heat of the sun to make the sunshine happy. I opened my windows not minding the wind. But alas, my dead weight could not bear the force of the wind. The wind neglected my outward beauty, prestige, friends……. It attacked my spirit, soul and body.

Little did I know that the contraceptive that Frank used failed. I got pregnant and we decided to abort it. We went to a far place in order to protect my integrity. On our way to the hospital we fell into the hand of the arm robbers. All attempts made to heed to toes was met with two bullets from their Ak47 separating my epithelial tissue down to the sebaceous gland before reaching out for my femur. The next thing, I saw myself in the hospital with a device hung for administering fluid into my veins. Mum was right beside me with a facial expression of a depressed and disappointed poor woman.

Ouch! My life was blown away from God’s presence, and my soul was given to the devil. My spirit was no longer sensitive to His voice. I was driven out of His tent, my soul was disturbed. I tried to put myself together, got back on my feet and move on with my life, but the ground was slippery. Despite the sunshine, my days are dark and cold. Walking during daylight does not stop me from stumbling. I could not attain the best of my academics because understanding becomes rare for me. Oh just because of My first kiss!

First kiss is the beginning of some people’s joy if it is done at the right and God’s own time but mine opens door for trauma. My pain is like a rain falling in stream of tears. Had I known I wouldn’t have submitted to him. My dreams, ambition, talent, vision, purpose was aborted in the twinkle of an eye. May be, if I come to this world again I may achieve my aim.

Young lady! Did I just heard saying your own story can never be as worst as this? It may interest you to know that each steps you take towards compromising your moral stands is a gradual process to a similar life as the girl in this story; an emotional ‘shatteredness’ and destiny wretchedness. Don’t you think it will be wise to watch your steps? You’re your eyes. Remember life is a seed. Whatever foundation you lay now must reflect in whatever building we see tomorrow. So be wise!
